One of the qualities I find attractive – and persuasive – in the Anglican Church in North America (“ACNA”) is their commitment to mission. Here’s their latest news release marking this gospel-driven evangelistic mission:
In just three months, the Anglican Church in North America has welcomed 39 new congregations. When the Anglican Church in North America officially launched in late June, it included 703 churches in the United States and Canada. Today, there are 742 congregations affiliated with the Anglican Church.
“We have an ambitious goal of planting 1,000 new churches in the next five years. It is very encouraging to see how much progress has already been made,” said Archbishop Robert Duncan.
1000 church plants in the next five years! Fantastic.

While I love the ACNA and believe their hearts are 100% tuned to the desires of the Lord and for his Kingdom, I’d love to know how much of this growth is transfer v. new adult baptism. My experience in AMIA leads me to believe that transferred churches are counted as “growth” when, in a Kingdom sense, it often was not. The best measure, I would think, would be Adult baptisms — and I’d love to hear about 1,000 adult baptisms over 5 years. That’d be a phenomenal goal!
Once we leave, I can envision us planting churches all over greater Charleston and beyond. This is the future.
Here in Ft Worth next week will welcome two new full parishes into the diocese that were once part of TEC and now wish to join ACNA, one in Oklahoma City and one in Arkansas. But we will also recognize the formation of a brand new mission station (average Sunday attendance over 30 in just a few months work) in Waco. So the ACNA numbers will grow by three more in less than two weeks.
