Question 118. What has God commanded us to ask of Him?
Answer: All things necessary for soul and body (a); which Christ our Lord has comprised in that prayer He himself has taught us.
(a) James 1:17: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
For your personal reflection:
My father grew up very poor on a farm in the Missouri Ozarks. Growing up, he didn’t know just how poor they were because everyone he knew lived the way they lived. Only when he moved away did he realize how little his family had by way of material things. One of the consequences of this reality was that it made him an incredibly generous man – generous with his money, generous with his skills, generous with his time. I learned very early that I could ask him for just about anything and if it was within his power to assist me he would. It was not a very big step for me to transfer that experience and sense of confidence to my Heavenly Father. And, to this day I remain deeply thankful for this lesson.
What experiences in your life help and/or hinder your turning to your Heavenly Father in prayer?
How do the promises of God in Scritpure speak to this issue?
