The Presiding Bishop’s Opening Comments
I quote from KJS’ opening comments to the 76th General Convention:
The overarching connection in all of these crises has to do with the great Western heresy – that we can be saved as individuals, that any of use alone can be in right relationship with God. It’s caricatured in some quarters by insisting that salvation depends on reciting a specific verbal formula about Jesus. That individualist focus is a form of idolatry, for it puts me and my words in the place that only God can occupy, at the center of existence, as the ground of all being. That heresy is one reason for the theme of this Convention.
A specific verbal formula such as, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord . . . .”?
So continues the slide into theological vapidity of the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church; and indeed, this church. Are you really surprised? She’s the same theological wonder who in her innagural sermon three years ago spoke of the church being “conjoined twins” and then made reference to “our mother, Jesus.” Her words and this theme continued through the House of Deputies President, Bonnie Anderson’s comments, as well as Michael Battle’s remarks at the opening legistlative session of the HOD. Phil Ashey, COO of the American Anglican Council, has a wonderful critique of the PB’s opening statement. Make sure you read it.
This, my friends, is the issue: we (orthodox Christians) have been mistaken; Jesus is not who He says He is; not who Scripture has revealed Him to be and not as the church has understood Him to be. A complete re-writing of the faith is the issue and has been underway; not homosexuality – which I have always believed to be a cultural smokescreen for the revisionists/re-appraisers (one simply has to look at how the GLBT community has been jerked around by their supposed friends all these years).
A prophetic sign? This morning as I walked into the Convention Center I noticed this sign, hmmm:

The Presdient of the House of Depututies, Bonnie Anderson, leading us through our first legislative session:

The Rev’d Jim Simons chairing the committee on the Dispatch of Business. Jim was the consultant to the Diocese of South Carolina during our episcopal search process. He is a deputy from the re-constituted Diocese of Pittsburgh and was/is one of the leaders of the Pittsburgh mutiny against Bishop Duncan. Very sad:

World Missions and BO33
Here’s the set-up for the Legislative Committee, World Missions, that I am assigned to monitor. You’ll see our own retired Suffragan, Bill Skilton (blue shirt) sitting next to Bishop Wolf and Gay Jennings. Bishop Wolf and Deputy Jennings chair the committee representing the House of Bishops and House of Deputies, respectively.
Silly me, I thought that a committee entitled “world missions” might actually talk about the proclamation of the Gospel message to the ends of the earth. And, maybe they will. But not just yet. Instead, here is a sampling of the resolutions set to appear before this committee: equal access to discernment process for transgendered persons; several resolutions seeking to overturn or supersede resolution B033 (a moratorium on same-sex blessings/ordinations passed in 2006); affirmation of full participation in the Anglican Communion for all Lesbian/Gay/Bi-sexual and Transgendered persons. And, that’s just the appetizer. I’ll keep you appraised on these as they move through committee and onto the floor. The only connection I can make between these topics and world missions is that passage will effectively END any credible efforts at world mission.
One side note: Interestingly, when the Archbishop of Canterbury walked into this legislative session the topic under consideration immediately shifted to Resolution D057: “Five Marks of Mission”. When members of committee objected as to the reordering the agenda and questioned the chair as to the rationale for the out-of-order consideration of the this particular resolution, the chair responded by saying, “I thought the ABC might rather hear us discuss the mission commitment of the Episcopal Church”. I’d like to hear someone around hear discuss, and affirm, that Jesus it THE way, THE truth and THE life.
Opening Eucharist

Here’s a pic from the opening Eucharist. KJS, herself, is the preacher (the red vested figure at the center of the pic). To my knowledge, members of the SC deputation either did not attend the Eucharist, or, like me, departed after she preached and before Communion (By 2006 Standing Committee resolution and overwhelming Diocesan Convention affirmation, The Diocese of SC remains in broken/impaired communion with the National Church):
Bonus

Finally, on a personal level, the highlight of my day was catching up with The Rev’d Paul Minor. Paul, a chaplain the the Guard, was a classmate of mine at Seminary. He and his wife, The Rev’d Cheryl Minor, are the godparents to my son, Nick. Their first-born, Rachel-Anne was born three days after our son, Tim, our Middler year of seminary:
Good night from Anaheim.

Sad stuff, Steve. Thanks for bringing us The Truth. TEC is lost and does not want to be found. Surely God winces… You and the other SC reps are in thoughts & prayers, brother.
DEAR Steve, I’m in prayer esp. tomorrow(Dioscesan Day to pray)that God’s truth will be heard by those who have ears to hear because of those of you who are willing to stand the gap, command the enemy to flee, and speak in His Love .I loved the holy recommendation by Jim Lewis to pray in the Spirit, as only God knows where the sword needs to strike. As sad as all of this is, I pray for our Lord to encourage and strengthen you with His peace…In the Family, Teasie Witte
I don’t want to flog the horse to death on this one (especially when you’re performing this unpleasant duty in Anaheim) but perhaps pejorative words like “mutiny” could be omitted in relation to Pittsburgh. I say this as one who is nominally within ACNA, assuming that I can reconcile certain things with which I am not particularly happy.
Whatever one’s view of Jim Simons – and his stock has sunk considerably in the past year – clergy like Bruce Robison (also a deputy in Anaheim) made it clear from the beginning that they could not accept the ecclesiological implications of realignment. Like your Bishop, they’ve accepted their Jeremiah-like role within the Episcopal Church, however implausible it might seem to their former colleagues. And feelings of betrayal are not, sadly, all on one side.
[...] some of it constructive). The first comes from a clergy deputy from South Carolina, Steve Wood, who is blogging about his experience there, and today offers this insight from the World Missions [...]
Honest report…..thanks Steve
Jeremy, feelings and actions are different things. I can appreciate the tension you find yourself in – marginally in ACNA, having concerns, etc. However, Fr. Simons has moved beyond feeling to action. He, has in fact, helped split the Diocese, and in my opinion, more egregiously, is concominant to the LAWSUIT filed against Bishop Duncan.
So, while you dither over Fr. Wood’s use of the the word “mutiny” Fr. Simons is actively suing a brother in Christ. Within the framework of Fr. Simons ACTIONS I belive Fr. Wood chose the right word.
Hello Steve — Ann and Myron Harrington of Charleston are providing a great service by sending convention updates by e-mail from the South Carolina Anglican Communion Network. One had to do with the intercessory prayer effort in which delegation members from the Diocese of San Joaquin are involved. This is an incredibly important effort. I commend to you this inspired and enlightening bit of encouragement from your Robert Eaton of Tulare, California.
I am impressed by the depth of detemination and inspiration of Brother Robert G. Eaton of Tulare, California with regard to his prayers for the convention.
This is the “Money Quote” in my humble opinion –
“This will give you an opportunity to testify. 14 So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; 15 for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. 17 You will be hated by all because of my name. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your souls.”
Carry On.
Proverbs 27:19 As in water the face is reflected as a face, so a persons heart reflects the person.
The true hearts of TEC are being shown, and it is a reflection of who they really are. Not pretty.
It’s almost funny to see KJS, speaking for TEC, identifying what she/they consider(s) to be heresy. I can think of numerous 13 year olds, having been confirmed, that have a better grasp on “verbal formulas” than TEC’s shady leadership. It’s almost funny…if it weren’t so sad.
All very confusing. Oh, for the days of debate over women in ministry.
Although, I do wonder if Bishop N.T. Wright would share any offense to the opening statements posted?
I’m just catching up a little because Carol has been sick. You know we are Baptist and just came into the fellowship of St. Andrews.I read the Bishops statement.I had no idea that any Christian leader in the world would make such a statement. It makes my bones hurt to think about what that man said.My prayer partner back at the Baptist Church of Beaufort is still screaming.I just had to swallow my next click on the keyboard.Instead I offer you this.Tomorrow I’m going to put some heavy weights onto the prayer for this Bishop. We need his full name including any nicknames.
p.s.In Beaufort The Baptist were not allowed to worship openly in St. Helenas Parish until 1804.The church did not recognize our personal relationships with our Lord and Savior. We were the Heretics and still must be.You dissenters are in and are very good company.
