Question 95. What is idolatry?
Answer: Idolatry is, instead of, or besides that one true God, who has manifested Himself in His word, to contrive, or have any other object, in which men place their trust (a).
(a) Ephesians 5:5: For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous ( that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
1 Chronicles 16:26: For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
Philippians 3:19: Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
Galatians 4:8: Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.
Ephesians 2:12: Remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
1 John 2:23: No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
2 John 1:9: Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
John 5:23: That all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
For your personal reflection:
In your own words, what is idolatry?
Can you identify any idol – or anything idolatrous – in your life?
Is Christ Jesus sufficient for you?

Tim Keller’s book ” Counterfeit Gods” is sobering. Sex, money, power, relationships and even our children are subject to becoming idols. I spent a lot of this weekend soul searching over this issue.
Maybe thats why God made the 1st commandment 1st. I know of little else that causes more suffering than breaking it.
