This is very much like something I told my daughter when she was in the 2nd grade–albeit a longer, and less strident version of my rant to her. But she ended up an honor student at Winthrop, and will go on to be a teacher herself.

I don’t see what the problem is either, Steve, except “nothing is unclean except to him that makes it unclean”. It’s sad, sad, sad.

I wish I had more kids, just so I could send them to school on Tuesday.

Steve,

I don’t think the actual speech is the hot spot of controversy, but the lesson plans. If you look around you can find the objections also are about what the students are supposed to do following the speech in the classroom.

From Fox News on an article by Joshua Rhett Miller: “But critics objected to the language of one of the lesson plans, for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 6, which suggested that students “write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.” Another assignment for students after hearing the speech was to discuss what “the president wants us to do.”

BTW – everyone got upset when George Bush did the same thing. No surprises here!

Steve, It’s more about the messenger. I wouldn’t have allowed any draft of anything he has to say delivered sight unseen. Now that we get a glimpse, I can say “Big Deal”. But, I wonder how much of his first draft had to be modified after the watchdogs ( and God bless ‘em)put the heat on. I refuse to live in paranoia, but I also won’t be shamed into accepting things just b/c the folks in power say we should.

I do NOT believe for one split second that this was the original speech. If so, the lesson plan (viewable) on another blog would NOT have made any sense.

At least the silly woman that made the lesson plan got her comuppance. The “fuss” was not over this speech, it was over what on earth that man was going to say that would have students questioning “What they could do to help the President”, or “What the President wanted them to do”.
