I watched the ABC’s address to the Global South Gathering and sat amazed. Amazed that this palaver came from the same man whose lectures on the Gospel of John I watched as a part of the St. Paul’s Theological Centre’s “Bible Track.” In the latter he was brilliant. In the former . . . ???
The crisis provoked by TEC within the Anglican Communion extends much further than pastoral practice and matters of interpretation. There must be, conjoined to our continual submission to primacy and normative role of Scripture, discussions and reformation of our church order. What is essential? What is nice but unnecessary? Are there, and should there be, mechanisms that bind us nationally and internationally? Should fidelity to the apostolic message and a demonstration of apostolic success be the defining marks of apostolic succession? Thoughts like these have been more frequent of late as have questions regarding the seeming failure by design of our church structures.
So, this morning I run across this brilliant piece (brilliant because I agree with it) by Canon Gary L’Hommedieu critiquing the ABC’s Global South Address – and the ABC, himself, as the leader of the Anglican Communion. Here are my favorite quotes:
As always, we will be wondering what Dr. Williams said for days, if not for the rest of our natural lives.
In spite of his remarkable intelligence, he may really have nothing to say. There may be no reality upon which to fix his eloquence.
Here is the pathos of Rowan Williams: there is more gravitas communicated through his Tolkienesque visage than through his pained erudition.
Pep talks like these are understood to promise something while delivering nothing, except the next round of promises. This is the recognized form of an address by a professional diplomat, particularly one of rank. Some acknowledge it as being quintessentially British, others as quintessentially rubbish.
Dr. Williams’ address to the Global Encounter is a study in theology as platitude.
It is Dr. Williams’ pastoral arithmetic that reveals the vacuity of his position as Archbishop. His domain is one that has ceased to exist. His theology has nothing to attach itself too. It is pure calculation–not the shrewd calculation of a political gamesman, but the mechanical calculation of a pastoral logician. He is trying to conjure spiritual reality through “true” statements based on echoes of a religious past. His hope is that the Conference attendees will give weight to his office out of politeness and propriety, since his position and person no longer carry weight.
The sociological reality of the Archbishop of Canterbury is that of a ghost.
The sun set long ago on the Church of England as the priesthood of an empire that lies in ruins. Her power structure exists now for no purpose, and this vacuity of purpose is manifest. The Global South to South Encounter is puzzling over a number of questions: among them, whether the Mother Church must soon be confined to assisted living, while an adult in the prime of life assumes the role of parent.

He’s all that and more!
ouch.

This piece outlines the need – particularly in his last sentence: “The Global South to South Encounter is puzzling over a number of questions: among them, whether the Mother Church must soon be confined to assisted living, while an adult in the prime of life assumes the role of parent.”
Let’s say they leave GSE4 wtih a clear understanding that the Church of England is no longer an effective leader for the Anglican Communion. I’m having a hard time trying to figure out how they bring about this change. Since this obviously shows a lack of imagination on my part, I’m very glad the Holy Spirit’s got control of the situation!
Well, I’ve read just about everything available and I’m sorry but I fail to see anything but a lot of talk/preaching from the StoS. Are there decisions to be made still? Does this mean the “Covenant”stands the way it is?
The last transmission sort of left me wondering, seems a bit irrelevant to anything going on in TEC, mostly concerned about the continent of Africa..Surely goodness and mercy, plus a better explanation will follow. Else, I can’t figure why anyone else was invited…

I am hoping that, at a minimum, the end result from GSE4 is that it’s Ridley Draft or nothing. My “opinion” is: If the GS says it is only in communion with those who sign the Ridley Draft – Game On. If they allow this business of an AC Steering Committee and agree to sign the watered-down version of the Covenant – Same Ole Same Ole. Again, that is merely an opinion.
Amen!
“In spite of his remarkable intelligence, he may really have nothing to say. There may be no reality upon which to fix his eloquence.” Sums it up in a nut shell! When I was at the Cathedral, McKeachie had me reading Rowan’s stuff – vacuous was my constant response!
Nobody is inconsequential.
Suzy, nice sound bite. However, if you’d read the article you would know that it did not suggest the ABC as a person is inconsequential, rather, the ABC is inconsequential within the Communion. The Church of England Newspaper reported this: “Delegates tell The Church of England Newspaper that Dr. Williams has exhausted his political and personal capital with the overseas church in the wake of successive disappointments in his leadership over the past few years. While the Global South continues to honour the office, Dr. Williams’ stock has reached a nadir.” Sounds a bit inconsequential to me.
inconsequentiopetent.???
I couldn’t agree more with the article. But I also agree that nobody is inconsequential. The question i: Is his influence (for it does still exist) for the advancement of the gospel or against. My conclusion is the later. So I am with Tami!
Great article! Thanks for posting.
A leader who carefully takes no position other than to stand above the fray is not a leader of substance. Standing for the faith and good order of the Church is not a spectator sport. In fact, the ABC has reached a place of insignificance in which his silence would likely produce more progress than his maunderings at this point.
As long as “sweet nothings” continue to waft across the water to us as a substitute for wisdom and leadership, there is increasing assurance that the budgetary needs of the next Lambeth conference will be considerably less.
