Thanks, Steve. As a Christian by faith, Jew by birth, classical musician by training and history lover this is fascinating. I had never heard that Dohnanyi and Bonhoeffer were related. And I lived in Ohio for 23 years!

Hello Tim. Good question. The first book I read was "Letters and Papers from Prison." Christoph von Dohnanyi, Bonhoeffer's nephew, was, at that time of my reading, the conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra and each year to commemorate his uncle's execution he would host a Bonhoeffer concert which included readings from his late uncle interspersed with symphonic music. Really amazing. Anyway, Dohnanyi was interviewed in the local paper and the reporter mentioned the book which contained a few letters from a teenage Dohnanyi to his imprisoned uncle. I was intrigued, I read the book.
Two other Bonheoffer classics are "The Cost of Discipleship" (320 pages) and "Life Together" (128 [pages) .
I'd read all three.

Great quote by Bonhoeffer on your blog...

Having never read any of his works, what would by a good first book to read by Bonhoeffer?
