I don’t know how I came across “Just Plain Bizzy” but I did. It is the blog of one of our young girls. Earlier in the week she wrote a bit about Lent. I liked what she wrote. I like her thought process and resolution. I liked, especially, her conclusion. I liked best of all that she’s the type of young woman we have at St. Andrew’s – wanting a faith that’s real and trying to live it out.
Here’s a snip:
as Lent has been on my mind, i have really studied the purpose behind this “religious” practice… i call it “religious” because somewhere a long the line the “church” came up with this practice which then sort of became “law” which is where i think we lost the whole purpose and heart behind it. for centuries, “christians” have been told what to do and lost the freedom to make these sacrifices by their own desire to love and honor Jesus. this again is where it became about me. me. me. and the intended purpose is forgotten.
well i have been really challenged by all of this this year. at first i thought, “i’m just not doing anything because it’s just man’s opportunity to yet again be self-glorified by giving up something tough and by will power he achieves success or, more accurately… fails miserably”… or then there are some that commit to doing something or taking something on, by will power, that is going to better themselves… you know what that means?

The best advice I’ve ever heard about giving up something for Lent came from a Catholic priest… “Give up the thing that is keeping you from God.”
